This is a photograph of the side of my head. Nice background, but who is this woman, really? I am now moving on to have a wee rant about that peculiar horror of all artists, writing your CV and 'Artist Statement' (do I hear murmurs of agreement out there?)... but how does this connect with the photo, you ask?
The connection is in the viewpoint. Most CV's present a very one-sided picture of a person - I mean, really, how do you 'pot' a career AND the personality that goes along with it into a few neatly arranged paragraphs? I can't do it (I just tried and ended up with nearly three pages of dates and name-dropping that on re-reading were as thrilling as sawdust); but then, hey, THAT's why I am an arter not a writer, duh! Artist's Statement? Same thing goes - that is what my art is. Get your head around it. It doesn't matter, REALLY it doesn't, what my art means to me because the bottom line is that if it means nothing to you or anyone else I am not going to be making a living at it, am I? So it's what it means to YOU that matters! You write the statement (actually, that's not a bad idea, any takers?)... and feel free to help me out with my grammar while you're at it, am sure I need it!
Here's another thing about CV's for artists... I get that a bit of a track record is good for galleries etc, or just to prove that you can consistently and reliably produce work and deal with the business side. But other than that what is the point? If you're booking a flight, then of course you want to know the plane is safe to travel on, but are you really interested in where it went last or the more crucial element of info, i.e. where is it going next?
I won't go on too much, I'm sure you get the drift. I am also pretty sure that many friends are now wondering when the blazes is she going to buy herself a new sweater, because that one has starred in all her photos of the past year, and it's getting a bit bobbly... which totally shows how interested you really are in my CV, doesn't it? Point made, I think.
My Artist's Statement? I am in the business of Dream Construction. But more on that for my next blog, maybe... along with a new sweater!
